Training & the Workforce Investment Act (WIA)

The Federal Workforce Investment ACT (WIA) which superseded the Job Training Partnership Act, offers a comprehensive range of workforce development activities through statewide and South Carolina Workforce Investment Act local organizations. Available workforce development activities provided in local communities can benefit job seekers, laid off workers, youth, incumbent workers, new entrants to the workforce, veterans, persons with disabilities, and employers.

The purpose of these activities is to promote an increase in the employment, job retention, earnings, and occupational skills improvement by participants. This, in turn, improves the quality of the workforce, reduces welfare dependency, and improves the productivity competitiveness of the nation.
One-Stop centers use varied strategies in providing the appropriate services to meet the needs of their customers:
  • Core, Intensive and Training Services.
  • WIA’s philosophy is “WORK FIRST”, followed by assistance in acquiring occupational skills upgrading, where necessary.
  • Job Search Assistance.
  • Career Counseling.
  • Assistance with resumes, cover letters, job applications, and interview coaching.
  • Skill assessment and development options.
WIA Offers You:
  • Extensive Assessments of skills, abilities, and interest.
  • In-depth career planning and guidance.

Before being considered for training you must first:
  • Work through core services.
  • Actively look for a job.
  • Be determined eligible for WIA.
  • Work with a counselor to develop a long-term employment plan.
  • Invest your time to improve your basic skills (if necessary).
  • Pursue a career that is IN DEMAND in the Waccamaw Region.
  • Exhaust all other possible funding.
Two other types of training are available:
  1. Jump Start - This program places a participant with an employer for four weeks to acquire skill upgrades. The participant is paid by the SC Employment Commission and is required to perform the duties agreed upon by the Employer and Job Developer.
  2. On-The Job Training - This program places a participant with an employer for up to four hundred hours, depending on the skill level of the occupation. The employer is reimbursed fifty per cent of the hourly wage agreed by contract to train the participant in the occupation for a full time permanent position.

How do I apply?
  1. The first step to enrolling in the WIA program is to register on the Job Search computer in our lobby, and obtain a job referral for the next available WIA orientation. Please bring the job referral to the Orientation.
  2. The second step is to attend the scheduled orientation. Orientation is the initial program information session.
  3. The third step is to fully complete the job search packet received at orientation and leave it at the front desk in our Resource Center.
  4. The fourth step is to contact a Case Manager.
